One thing has been quietly constant through this whole story: the random seed. Every number you’ve seen came from the same 80/20 split. Change the seed, you get a different number. Do it a hundred times and what you thought was an answer turns out to be one draw from a wide distribution. For unregularised OLS the spread is almost absurd.
